The colorful sparkling gemstones have a great charm to people all over the world. Each gemstone has its own value and meaning to the owner. Known as one of the most popular gemstones on earth, amethyst has been highly appreciated thank to its mystical beauty and the powers to open human’s mind and enhance their creativity as well as passion. People would think they could only get the amethyst from a store, that’s totally wrong! Here in Lapland, we let you mine your own lucky gemstone. Are you brave enough to stay outside in this cold Arctic weather and do it?
This time, we will go on a journey to the only amethyst mine left in Europe, which located in Pyha Luosto, Lapland, Finland. Pyha Luosto is known as one of the most beautiful national parks in Finland, which is 120 km away from Rovaniemi. This natural reserve park is one of the favorite locations for activities in Lapland including hiking, trekking, mountain biking, bird watching, berry picking or snowshoeing. At first, you will get your pick up from your hotel or accommodation and we provide you our thermal clothes to stay warm throughout the journey.
After one and a half hours drive to the north from Rovaniemi, you will arrive the destination. It is now time for you to open eye-wide and ready for some great photograph because we are now at the stunning Lappish village of Luosto, where the amethyst mine locates. To get to mine on the top of the snowy hill, you will be transferred on a special transportation named snowcat. From the snowcat window, you can clearly see the wonderful route inside the snow-covered Arctic forests. You will be stunned by the miracle beauty from the highest peak of the Pyha mountain. You will be surrounded by an-all-white-landscape, and feel closer to the sky more than ever. The pink shaded sky color together with the sparkling snow and the snow-capped birch tree create a perfect painting for you to enjoy. Take your camera with you quick!
Leaving the snowcat, you will walk to the Lampivaara mine and try your luck to find the Arctic diamond in the heart of the snowy mountain. The mine was formed about 2000 million years ago in the bowels of the ancient moutains. We provide you the guided tour at the mine visit, where you will learn all about the amethyst, its history, meanings, value as well as where to find it. This sparkling purple stone is truly the diamond of Arctic area. Then, you will start to dig your own gemstone. If you are lucky enough to get one, then it will be your own precious gift from Lappish nature for you. Try as hard as you can!
If you don’t get to dig one, don’t worry, there is a small Amethyst shop there that you can buy a nice souvenir for yourself after we warm up and enjoy a Lappish lunch together. All you need to do is believe in your luck and book with us! Let’s go for a gemstone mining now!
